Help Your Child Set SMART Goals This School Year

Setting goals at the beginning of the school year is a great way to ensure your child stays on track all year. Before sitting down together to define your child's goals, be sure you know how to set the most effective goals. If you're not sure what a SMART goal is, this post can teach you all about them.

Specific

When helping your child set a goal, be sure the goal is as specific as possible. A vague goal won't provide a clear target to aim for, therefore, it won't really help keep your child motivated. For example, if your child decides they want to get a good grade in Biology, they may just settle for any grade as long as it isn't considered bad. If they decide, however, that they want to get an A, they'll have something specific to work towards. Along with the actual goal, they should be able to develop a plan to get there. This plan should include what resources they'll need, who can help them get there, and action steps they need to take.

Measurable

A goal needs to be measurable so that you and your child can track their progress. As they get deeper into the school year, your child should be able to see their gains and assess their progress. Setting short term goals or deadlines along the way to meeting their larger goal is a great way to measure their progress. Not only will they stay more motivated, they can also make adjustments if they see that something isn't working.

Attainable

As much as we want to believe that anything is possible, this isn't the case. For this reason, your child's goals should be attainable. This doesn't mean they should be easy, on the contrary, your child's goals should push them beyond their comfort zone but still be possible. Have them think of any possible challenges they may face along the way so that they can be prepared to overcome these.

Relevant

If your child sets goals that they don't really care about or that don't matter, they probably won't be motivated by these. Because of this, it's important that your child's goals have some kind of meaning behind them. Have them set goals that are worth their time and that can lead to greater things.

Trackable

Finally, your child's goal should be trackable. Set a deadline or target day by when they want to achieve each goal. By setting a deadline, they'll know just how much time they have to get there, helping them develop a useful plan. As we mentioned earlier, setting short term deadlines can help them stay on track.
